Instagram Gets Its Own App Clip, but Still No iPad App

The Instagram team, known for being a bit late to the party in adopting new iOS features, has unveiled a new addition for its iOS users: an App Clip. Despite continuous user requests for an iPad app, Instagram is introducing an App Clip in version 319.0.2 available to beta testers via TestFlight.

An App Clip, as described by Apple, is a “small part of an app that lets you do a task quickly, like rent a bike, pay for parking, or order food.” In essence, it’s a mini app allowing users to try out specific functionalities without downloading the full app.

The Instagram App Clip focuses on the Reels short video platform integrated into the main app. Similar to TikTok’s App Clip, it enables users to experience Reels in the app’s native interface without having Instagram installed. For instance, if someone shares an iMessage link to an Instagram Reel, it will open in the App Clip instead of the default web browser. Users can scroll through popular Reels and share specific ones. After watching around six Reels, the App Clip encourages users to download Instagram for continued Reel enjoyment.

This feature adds value to the iOS Instagram app, complementing the Live Activities support implemented last year. However, it’s disappointing to note that developing an iPad app remains low on the priority list for the Instagram team (and this also applies to Threads).

There’s no information on the release date for the update with the App Clip to the public. You can download Instagram for free on the App Store.
