Vision Pro sales have been underwhelming, with less than 100,000 units sold in the U.S. since its February launch, according to market tracker IDC (via Bloomberg).
Vision Pro Sales: Anticipated Domestic Decline
The sales forecast for the current quarter suggests a 75% decline in U.S. sales, but the recent international launch this month is anticipated to balance the drop.
Hope for a More Affordable Version
IDC suggests that introducing a more affordable version, approximately half the current price of $3,500, could revive interest by 2025. However, significant sales growth is not anticipated for the upcoming year. The Vision Pro is set to debut in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, and Germany on Friday, July 12.
Mixed Reviews from Users
User reviews have been varied. While many users have praised the hardware and technological innovations of the Vision Pro, concerns persist about its functionality, the intuitiveness of gesture-based controls, and the weight and comfort of the device. Additionally, criticism has been directed at the limited content available for the device in VR applications.
Vision Pro Sales: Importance of Content Availability
“The Vision Pro’s success will ultimately hinge on the content available, irrespective of its price,” said Francisco Jeronimo, vice president at IDC. “As Apple rolls out the product internationally, ensuring the availability of local content is essential.”
Manufacturing Challenges and Future Plans
Due to manufacturing complexities, Apple is expected to produce fewer than 400,000 Vision Pro headsets in 2024, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Nevertheless, Apple is reportedly already working on a more affordable version of the Vision Pro for 2025. IDC’s Jeronimo forecasts that this new version will more than double sales when it is released in the latter half of 2025.
