Apple Unveils First Public Beta for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18

ios 18 beta

Apple has released the first public beta for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, making the new software versions available to the public since their introduction at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Prior to this, Apple had already released three developer betas, and the content of the first public beta mirrors that of the third developer beta.

How to Download the Betas

Public beta testers enrolled in Apple’s beta testing program can access the iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 updates by navigating to the Settings app, selecting General, tapping Software Update, and choosing the iOS 18 Public Beta option. It is important to remember that beta software may contain bugs, battery issues, and other complications. Therefore, it’s advisable to install the beta on a secondary device or create a backup in case a downgrade to iOS 17 becomes necessary.

Introducing Apple Intelligence

iOS 18 introduces Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI features integrated into the operating system. While not all functionalities are currently available, notable features include Writing Tools for rewriting, polishing, proofreading, and summarizing text across apps, and the ability to generate custom images using Image Playground. Additionally, users can create custom emoji through the Genmoji feature, and Siri has undergone a complete overhaul. However, Apple Intelligence is not yet live in the betas.

AI Features and Compatibility

The AI features in iOS 18 will be exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro models and M-series iPads. The update also brings a redesigned Home Screen, allowing users to rearrange app icons and widgets with open spaces, and includes a tint option and new darker colors for Dark Mode.

Revamped Control Center

Control Center has been revamped, offering a new Controls Gallery where users can select and arrange controls, group related controls, and customize sizes. The update allows for customization of the Flashlight and Camera icons on the Lock Screen, as well as Control Center options for the iPhone 15 Pro’s Action Button.

Enhanced Messages App

In the Messages app, users can schedule texts, use any emoji for the Tapback feature, and send messages via satellite. Text effects are available for any word, phrase, or emoji, and formatting options like bold and italic are included. For communications with Android users, Apple now supports RCS, enabling seamless sending of images and files, viewing typing indicators, read receipts, and sending texts over Wi-Fi.

Improvements in Safari and Photos Apps

Safari now offers the ability to summarize webpages and highlight important information at a glance. The Photos app has been revamped to better showcase users’ best photos. A dedicated Passwords app simplifies access to saved passwords and logins, and users can now lock any app with Face ID or Touch ID.
