At WWDC, Apple introduced macOS 15 Sequoia, the latest iteration of its Mac operating system. This release includes numerous new AI features, a dedicated Password app, a major update to Safari, and an innovative Continuity feature called iPhone Mirroring.
Apple Intelligence: The Heart of New AI Features
Central to the new AI capabilities is “Apple Intelligence,” which Apple describes as a highly integrated, personalized AI experience. This cutting-edge generative artificial intelligence enhances user experiences across iPhone, iPad, and Mac by combining generative models with personal context to deliver highly relevant intelligence. Apple Intelligence understands and creates language and images, takes actions across apps, and leverages personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks.
“The powerful combination of Apple silicon and macOS’s renowned ease of use has made the Mac more capable than ever,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering. “With macOS Sequoia, we’re elevating productivity and intelligence to new heights. Apple Intelligence unlocks incredible new features for the Mac, and with enhancements like iPhone Mirroring, a major Safari update, and new games, Mac users are in for a treat.”
Exciting New Features in macOS Sequoia
Image Playground
This new feature allows users to create playful images quickly, choosing from Animation, Illustration, or Sketch styles. Integrated into apps like Messages and available as a standalone app, Image Playground is designed for ease of use.
iPhone Mirroring
This new Continuity feature lets users view and control their iPhone directly from their Mac. Custom wallpapers and icons appear as they do on the iPhone, allowing users to swipe between pages, launch apps, and interact using the Mac’s keyboard, trackpad, and mouse. Audio also streams through the Mac. Users can drag and drop items between devices seamlessly, and iPhone notifications now appear on the Mac.
macOS 15 Sequoia: Safari and User Interface Enhancements
Safari Highlights
This new feature simplifies web discovery by providing directions, summaries, and quick links to more information about people, music, movies, and TV shows. Reader mode has been redesigned to offer a streamlined view, summary, and table of contents for longer articles.
Window Management
macOS Sequoia introduces automatic window tiling, maximizing screen space. Dragging a window to the screen’s edge suggests a tiled position, and new keyboard and menu shortcuts improve tile organization.
Presenter Preview
Enhanced with new shortcuts, this feature now includes built-in backgrounds, customizable with gradients, system wallpapers, or personal photos. Background replacements can be used during video calls in FaceTime or third-party apps like Webex.
macOS 15 Sequoia: New Passwords App and More
Passwords App
A new dedicated app for managing Wi-Fi passwords, app and website passwords, verification codes, and more. Passwords sync across devices and use autofill. The app is also available on Windows through iCloud for Windows.
Photos and Memories
The Photos app now features Memories, allowing users to create stories by typing a description. Apple Intelligence selects the best photos and videos, crafts a storyline, and arranges them into a movie. A new Clean Up tool can remove distracting objects from photos without affecting the main subject.
macOS 15 Sequoia: Additional Features
- Messages: New text effects, emoji and sticker Tapbacks, and message scheduling.
- Maps: New hike and trail routes.
- Photos: New Collections feature.
- Notes: Improved intelligence.
- Calendar/Reminders: Enhanced integration.
macOS 15 Sequoia will be available to the public this fall.
